Mother o’ Mine

If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
– Rudyard Kipling (@poetsorg)

A woman wears many faces, motherhood being one of them. Motherhood itself brings with it an entire gamut of emotions. While tenderness and care are a mother’s hallmarks, fierce protectiveness is too. A mother can be both a lamb and a lioness. Tyagi depicts this tenderness through the bird and her fledgling, which she nurses protectively under her wing. It is through her scent, her voice, and her embrace alone that a baby, no matter how agitated will fall silent. No matter what other material comforts may be offered in the form of a cozy pram or cot, there is nothing more soothing to a child, than the mother’s lap. The bonds of motherhood are forged even before the child sees the world, which is why this bond is often the strongest and most enduring. It is rightly said that no one can know a child better than its mother because her relationship trumps every other by nine additional months, which none can compete with.

Poonam Chandrika Tyagi was born in 1964 and acquired her master’s degree in ‘Drawings & Paintings’ from R G College, Meerut. Poonam is fascinated by the female form, especially the classic Indian beauty who unfolds in layers and has hidden within her several facets. Be it the tenderness of motherhood, the anger of Kali or the lust and eroticism of the Kamasutra. Her images invoke a sense of tradition and aim to depict the ‘Indian’ness of a woman in all her primordial and sublime glory.
