‘United we stand divided we fall’
Ten’s sticks together unbreakable
Can be broken easily if given to all.
Wind easily blows the dust
But cannot move the rock;
Birds trapped in net, united,
Along with net, flew the flock.
As well, If people are united
For valid and right cause,
There can’t be any reason

“naavu ”, translated from Kannada as “We Together” is an Installation piece. It encompasses a series of ‘padukas’ – or wooden sandals – that are a time-honored symbol of unity in spirit and testimony that advocates the principles and postulation of non-violence. The pulchritude of G R Iranna ’s work lies in the many messages it exudes, ones from many people of varied walks of life – such as the farmer, coppersmith, and barber – forging a thread of harmony.
G R Iranna is a contemporary reinvention artist based out of Delhi, India. Iranna’s works comprise of installations, works on paper and canvasses. His education in a Gurukul and 7 years of ashram life have shaped his artistic view and predilections. He received his MFA from the Delhi College of Art and has studied at the Wimbledon School of Art in London. His most recent solo exhibition was conducted at Aicon Gallery in New York, titled “Primordial Ash”. His use of ash is a reflection of his roots, where newborns are blessed by smearing ash across their forehead – symbolizing the inevitable mortality of humans. His work has been showcased at the group shows such as Peter Muller Gallery (Munich), and Gong Art Space (Seoul) among many more.
“Naavu” is being featured at the Venice Biennale 2019. This year, the Art Biennale is taking place from 11th May – 24th November 2019. Desee Art aims to shed light on the exhibition’s IndiaPavilion, that is celebrating 150 years of Gandhi in a show titled “Our Time for a Future Caring”. This year’s participation marks the second time India is present at the Biennale in the past 120+ years!
