Biography

Jaya Baheti’s engagement in art and art practice spanned many decades, originating in her girlhood and evolving through time and life experiences. Her body of works in the visual art sphere spans different mediums, building over a strong foundation in painting. In her acrylic paintings on canvas, she has been fearlessly spontaneous and idiosyncratic in her process of creation. Very often she works directly on the canvas without any preparatory drawings, seizing the spirit of the very moment. The painted figures over fields of vibrant, tranquil colors tell a story fueled with feminine energy harmonious with nature, which for the artist is nostalgic and a process of going back and forth in time and giving out to the universe.

The artist’s childhood life, songs, folklores and mythologies serve as inspiration- the visuals speak out of gratitude toward life and nature as we see Jaya's painted women, human figures, birds, elephants and the depiction of cattle (Gauri) which she particularly holds close to her heart. Simple yet dynamic strokes of human expression adorned with the spirited representation of flora, fauna, and playful colors create a multifaceted story of Jaya’s paintings, which then transcends into other mediums like textiles, ceramics or wooden artifacts. The body of work speaks about a generous human value which is to care for the nature you’re living with and the aesthetics of the work exchange a playful spirit with the viewers.

Jaya has been participating in exhibitions since the early 90’s till today, spanning many solo and group shows across the country and internationally, while collaborating with fashion designers and conducting art workshops.
