Biography

Manjit Gogoi, hailing from a small town near Kaziranga National Park in Assam, draws profound inspiration from their upbringing in an environmentally conscious family. His artistic journey is a poignant exploration of the consequences of human activities on the environment, focusing on themes like habitat destruction, species extinction, climate change, pollution, and the exploitation of natural resources.

Having initially practiced with raw materials sourced from the surroundings, Manjit was influenced by traditional techniques using bamboo, cane, and clay from Assam. Upon moving to Mumbai for higher education, a shift occurred, leading to the incorporation of urban materials collected from construction sites, plastic waste, and e-waste. This evolution embraced the concept of upcycling, becoming a central theme in his work.

From the organic assemblage of traditional materials to the innovative use of urban detritus, his practice embodies a narrative that mirrors the intersection of ecology and modernity.The artist’s fascination and interest toward finding out new possibilities in the mundane is a remarkable one where he transforms found objects and materials into artwork materials and components. In a process independent of the market, he visits construction sites and collects materials. After that, through a meticulous process of chemical treatment and, if needed, purification, he prepares final materials for the work.

The artist's thematic focus on habitat destruction, species endangerment, and environmental exploitation serves as a powerful commentary on contemporary issues. Manjit Gogoi received the Saroj Jain Sculpture Award from J.J School of Art, Mumbai in 2023. He has participated in several exhibitions across India including the group show ‘Raag’ by Dot Line Space at Great Eastern Home, Mumbai (2023), the 43rd Monsoon Art show at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2023, Kochi Muziris Students’ Biennale 2022 and many others.
